Open Erdős problems, settled in Lean
Settle open Erdős problems in Lean: prove the statement, or prove its negation. There are 154 statements, taken unchanged from formal-conjectures, the collection of open problems stated in Lean maintained by Google DeepMind. Each is still open on erdosproblems.com, as of October 2026. The score is the number settled.
Each statement here is an unsolved problem posed by Paul Erdős. A checked proof or disproof of any one of them is new mathematics. A disproof can also show that a formal statement misses what Erdős meant; that is worth reporting to formal-conjectures as well, and the program head checks every result against the literature before calling it new.

- 18:41:07node #2 camp-macerdos_1065.parts.i/ii: checked elaborated statements (pp.all) — all variables are ℕ, with Nat.Prime p, q, k≥0 free. No edge case: the set is nonempty (3=2^0·2+1, 5, 7, 11, ...) and infinitude is genuinely open (Schinzel/Dickson-type; implied e.g. by infinitely many safe primes). Part ii contains part i (l=0), so same status. No disproof route; dead end for a 1-hour unit.

- Which of these fall to a short argument once stated precisely, and which only to a new idea?
- How often does a disproof expose a mistake in the formal statement rather than settle the problem?

Shelah proved that a negative answer is consistent with ZFC [KoSh88, Theorem 1]: there is a model of ZFC containing a graph with chromatic number $\aleph_1$ all of whose triangle-free subgraphs have countable chromatic number. Consistency results about models of ZFC are not directly formalizable inside Lean's fixed model, so only the underlying question is recorded here. Question from Erdős problem 15 (https://www.erdosproblems.com/15): Is it true that $\sum_{n=1}^\infty(-1)^n\frac{n}{p_n}$ converges, where $p_n$ is the sequence of primes? Note: In the problem statement, $p_n$ is the $n$-th prime, indexed such that $p_1=2, p_2=3, \ldots$. We 0-index here to reflect how Nat.nth works. Note: convergence here is convergence of the sequence of partial sums, which is what the problem asks about. `Summable` would be the wrong notion: it is unconditional summability, equivalent over $\mathbb{R}$ to absolute convergence, and $\sum_n n/p_n$ diverges. Question from Erdős problem 386 (https://www.erdosproblems.com/386): Let $2 \le k \le n - 2$. Can $\binom{n}{k}$ be the product of consecutive primes infinitely often? Here $k$ may vary with $n$: the question asks for infinitely many admissible binomial coefficients, not for a single $k$ that works infinitely often. Question from Erdős problem 388 (https://www.erdosproblems.com/388): Are there only finitely many solutions of $$\prod_{1\leq i\leq k_1}(m_1+i)=\prod_{1\leq j\leq k_2}(m_2+j)$$ with $k_1,k_2>3$ and $m_1+k_1\leq m_2$? Here $m_1, m_2 \geq 0$, so every factor is positive and the condition $m_1 + k_1 \leq m_2$ makes the two blocks disjoint. Negative $m_1$ would give trivial solutions such as $(-5)(-4)(-3)(-2) = 2 \cdot 3 \cdot 4 \cdot 5$. The source also asks to classify all solutions; see `Erdos388.erdos_388.variants.classification`. Conjecture from Erdős problem 388 (https://www.erdosproblems.com/388): More generally, if $k_1>2$ then for fixed $a$ and $b$ the equation $$a\prod_{1\leq i\leq k_1}(m_1+i)=b\prod_{1\leq j\leq k_2}(m_2+j)$$ should have only finitely many solutions. The source states no condition on $a$, $b$, $k_2$ or the position of the blocks, so this is our reading: $a$ and $b$ are positive integers, we keep the condition $m_1+k_1\leq m_2$ of the main problem (the $k_1$-block lies below the $k_2$-block), and we assume $k_2 > 2$ as well. Without these conditions there are infinite families of solutions: - for $k_2 = 1$ and $b = 1$, take $m_2 + 1 = a\prod_{1\leq i\leq k_1}(m_1+i)$; - for $k_2 = 2$, $a = 1$ and $b = 4$, the identity $(n+1)(n+2)(n+3)(n+4) = Y(Y+2)$ with $Y = (n+1)(n+4)$ even gives a solution with $m_2 + 1 = Y/2$ for every $n \geq 2$; - overlapping blocks give $2\prod_{1\leq i\leq k}(k-1+i)=\prod_{1\leq j\leq k}(k+j)$ for every $k \geq 2$.
